1. Why Are We Moving Away from Traditional Aluminium Checker Plate?
Aluminium checker plate has long been a popular choice for Australian off-road caravans, semi-off-road caravans and camper trailers.
It offers a traditional rugged appearance and provides physical protection to the lower sections of caravan walls.
However, painted aluminium checker plate also has certain limitations:
- Extra Weight: Traditional aluminium side protection adds weight to the caravan body.
- Visible Scratches: Painted surfaces can become scratched during off-road adventures.
- Paint Damage: Contact with branches, stones and other obstacles may damage the painted finish.
- Maintenance: Scratched or chipped painted surfaces may require touch-ups to maintain their appearance.

2. Introducing KOTAI DiamondShield™ – Lightweight, Scratch-Resistant Side Protection
DiamondShield™ features a mineral-reinforced, textured protective surface designed to provide excellent resistance to everyday scratches.
Unlike traditional painted aluminium checker plate, the new material demonstrated impressive scratch resistance during our in-house knife-scratch test.
Even after repeated scraping with a knife, no visible scratches were observed in our demonstration.
This makes DiamondShield™ a promising solution for caravans travelling through environments where branches, bushes and abrasive contact can damage conventional painted finishes.

3. Up to 50kg Weight Saving on a 20ft Off-Road Caravan
One of the biggest advantages of DiamondShield™ is its lightweight construction.
Based on our factory comparison, the new side protection system saves approximately 3kg per linear metre compared with our previous aluminium checker plate installation.
For our 20ft off-road caravan, the estimated total weight saving is approximately 50kg.

Weight savings are based on KOTAI’s factory measurements and may vary depending on caravan size, layout and installation.

In our factory demonstration, a knife was repeatedly drawn across the DiamondShield™ surface.
The result was impressive: no visible scratches were left on the tested surface.
This demonstration highlights the potential benefits of a mineral-reinforced protective finish, particularly compared with painted aluminium surfaces that may show scratches or paint damage.
While scratch resistance is not the same as impact resistance, DiamondShield™ offers an exciting alternative for customers seeking a more practical exterior finish.

Starting with our updated caravan specifications, 750mm DiamondShield™ side protection will replace traditional aluminium checker plate as our standard configuration.
We understand that some customers still prefer the classic appearance of aluminium checker plate.
For this reason, traditional aluminium checker plate will remain available as an optional upgrade.
This gives customers greater flexibility when customising their caravans.
